BIWTA indefinitely suspends passenger movement on Shimulia-Banglabazar ferry route

Movement of all launches, speedboats and, passenger trawlers has been suspended from Shimulia in Munshiganj to Banglabazar in Madaripur. However, ferries will run under emergency services as per government instructions, reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting BIWTA official.

Shahadat Hossain, assistant director of the Shimulia Ghat of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said speedboat services have already been discontinued.

According to government orders, launch operations and passenger trawlers will be closed from 8am tomorrow.

In the meantime, announcement has been made in the ghat areas. The naval police and the local administration have been informed to take action, he said.

Shafiqul Islam, assistant general manager (AGM) of Shimulia Ghat of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), said emergency services such as ambulances and freight trucks can use ferry services.

However, public passenger transport will not be able to cross, Shafiqul said.
