BNP leader Shamsul Islam passes away

BNP leader M Shamsul Islam died at a private hospital in Dhaka this afternoon at the age of 86.

He breathed his last at United Hospital around 2:30pm, Syrul Kabir Khan, a staff of BNP Chairperson’s media wing, told The Daily Star.

Shamsul who had been suffering from cancer for a long period was admitted to the hospital yesterday, Syrul said.

He was minister for food ministry and information ministry when BNP-led alliance was in power in 2001-2006. He was also the state minister to the post and telecommunication ministry during 1991-96 BNP tenure.

His first namaz-e-janaza will be held at Gulshan Jame Mosque after Asr prayers today.

His second and third janaza will be held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad and in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office tomorrow.

After the last namaz-e-janaza, he will be buried at his village graveyard in Munshiganj after Asr prayers tomorrow.
