Devotees pay their respect to Saraswati, the Hindu Goddess of knowledge, music and arts. On the day of the puja, men, women and children wake up early in the morning. Some of them like to fast in the honour of the Goddess. Students as well as adults offer her flowers and place a book of their choice at the altar in the hope that they will be blessed by her. The festival usually has two parts: the morning features the religious aspect with prayers offered to the revered Goddess and the evening sees cultural programmes in style.
