Wild at Heart (1990)

Director: David Lynch

Writers: Barry Gifford, David Lynch

Stars: Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe

Runtime: 125 minutes

Plot: Young lovers Sailor and Lula run from the variety of weirdos that Lula's mom has hired to kill Sailor.

Review: ''Wild at Heart,'' which was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, was inspired by Barry Gifford's novel about Lula Pace Fortune and her lover, Sailor Ripley. The novel progresses through a conversation, in which people's characters and lives are portrayed through the brand names they choose to drop. The director has taken this vibrant work and has blown it up to epic proportions.

Though the actors are constantly upstaged by the movie, they deliver their roles. Miss Dern's performance of the character feels like it is straight out of a country ballad. Mr. Cage is not always an easy actor as he tends to go over the edge, but he has a role that perfectly suits him, like the Elvis-inspired snakeskin jacket he wears. “Wild at Heart,” looks very stylish and the director's pride is pleasurably perplexing rather than out of focus.
