Winner of Celebrating Life 2017

Best Debut Film Award - Nuhash Humayun

Nuhash Humayun, while relatively new to film, is already making his mark in the cinematic arts. In this year's Celebrating Life, Nuhash received the “Best Debut Film Award” for his short film ‘Paperfrogs’. Written and directed by Nuhash, the film is a coming-of-age story about strangers finding solace in an impromptu game of origami frogs. The win seals his identity in the world of Showbiz, especially after his critically acclaimed Eid drama ‘Hotel Albatross’ under his belt as well. We talk to Nuhash about how he perceives the award, his aspirations and more.

When you were making Paperfrogs, did you think that you'll win such a prestigious award with it?

Everyone involved in Paperfrogs worked relentlessly hard because they had faith in the story. Of course, its always great to see hard work recognized. We didn't have a star studded cast or a stellar marketing campaign behind this film, we shot the whole thing in my living room with my mother cooking for the cast and crew. It's definitely a very personal film in that manner - and the award solidifies the idea that a very intimate, personal vision is worth bringing to life on screen.

How did you feel when you got to know that you had won the award?

It was very cool for me and everyone involved in the production. The Daily Star and Standard Chartered does an amazing job with this program, it's inspiring. No one truly makes art for awards but the recognition can be great motivation.

Is there anyone you want to dedicate this award to?

My mother, without a doubt. She bought me my first digital camera when I was 13 and I was making short films with my friends ever since. My journey in the visual arts would've been extremely difficult without a family supporting my vision- not just when I'm winning awards, but when I'm at a low and really need that love and support.
