Vote rigging, clash mar municipal, UP elections

A young man was fined for rigging vote in union parishad (UP) polls of Patuakhali while 20 people, including a policeman, were injured in a clash over by-election to the mayoral post of Sunamganj municipality yesterday.

A youth was fined Tk 5,000 for rigging vote at Dokkhin Lebukhali Government Primary School centre in Dumki upazila, said Md Arifur Rahman, upazila returning officer.

Khan Abi Shahanur Khan, district election officer, said elections to seven UPs were held peacefully.

The unions are Baliatali, Mithaganj, Dhankhali, Champapur and Dalbuganj in Kalapara upazila and Shrirampur and Lebukhali in Dumki upazila.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people were injured in a clash over by-election to the mayoral post of Sunamganj municipality.

BNP candidate Dewan Sajaur Raja Suman and independent candidate Dewan Ganiul Saladin rejected election hours before the voting ended.

Only three candidates were vying for the mayoral post which went vacant after the death of Ayub Bakhth on February 1 this year.
