Traders demand criminals' arrest

Traders of Sarishabari upazila headquarters at a rally yesterday demanded immediate arrest of the key accused in connection with the case for robbing Tk 3.5 lakh from a business house at Shimla Bazar on March 31.

A good number of traders under the banner of 'Sarishabari Town Banik Samity' and 'Sarishabari Town Banik Samobay Samity' formed a human chain at Bangabandhu Intersection around 12:00noon, keeping their business closed for two hours from 10:00am.

According to the prosecution, accused Rukan, 30, executive member of Sarishabari municipality Jubo League, along with his cohorts entered Talha Enterprise, a business centre that sells plastic furniture and ceramic products, around 6:30pm on March 31 and demanded Tk 5,000 as toll.

As Sujan Kumar Biswas, manager of the shop, refused to give the money, Rukan and his men beat him mercilessly and took away Tk 3.5 lakh from the cash box.

They also vandalised furniture displayed for sale there, Sub-Inspector of Sarishabari Police Station Matiur Rahman, also investigation officer (IO) of the case, said.

After taking treatment at Sarishabari Upazila Health Complex for two days, Sujan filed a case accusing three named people, including Rukan, and four to five other unnamed ones on April 2, the IO said, adding that they arrested a named accused Shanto, 22, on Wednesday night.
