Mayor apologises to journalist

Ranishankoil Municipality Mayor Alamgir Sarkar on Wednesday apologised for threatening a journalist with dire consequences for running a report on irregularities in a road construction work on January 28.

Mayor Alamgir, also president of Ranishankoil upazila unit Jubo League, apologised at the conference room of Ranishankoil Upazila Nirbahi Officer's office in presence of local journalists' leaders, politicians and police personnel.

According to a complaint, Mayor Alamgir phoned Khurshid Alam Shawon, 24, upazila correspondent of Bangla daily Protidiner Sangbad, on February 1 and threatened him that he would chop his hands and legs for running news on irregularities in the road construction work, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

After publishing of the news, JICA high officials visited the construction site on February 1.
