Brutality on Madrasa Boy

Accused teacher still at large

Ten days into the brutal torture on a 12-year-old madrasa student in Phulpur upazila under the district, the accused teacher is yet to be arrested.

The victim, Omar Faruq, a student of Banshati Hafezia Madinatul Ulum Madrasa in Phulpur, was mercilessly beaten allegedly by Hafez Md Harun-or-Rashid, a teacher of the madrasa, on April 3.

“The accused teacher went into hiding, switching off his mobile. We are continuing drives to arrest him,” said AKM Mahbub Alam, OC of Phulpur Police Station.

“He beat up my son mercilessly and kept him confined to the madrasa untreated for three days,” said the victim's father Mustafa Kamal, a day labourer of Nasullah in adjacent Haluaghat upazila.

On information, the boy's relatives rescued him from the madrasa and admitted him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) last Friday and his father lodged a case with Phulpur Police Station accusing Harun-or-Rashid.

Due to severe physical and mental torture, the boy is suffering from acute stress disorder and showing abnormal behaviour, said Dr Ayub Ali, an associate professor and head of paediatric department of MMCH.

For continuing study at the madrasa, Faruq stayed as a lodging teacher at the adjacent house of Liton Mondol.

“During Faruq's stay at my house for over two years, we did not see any mental problem with him. During his captivity for three days at the madrasa, the teachers took food for Faruq from my house by other students, saying that the boy was suffering from fever,” Liton said.
