'Thief' beaten dead by mob in Dhaka

An alleged thief was beaten to death by a mob in Dhaka’s Khilgaon area this morning.

The deceased was identified as Biplab, 32, hailing from Laxmipur and a resident of North Kazipara in Kafrul, Kazi Mainul Islam, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Biplab took away a motorbike after cutting the collapsible gate of a house at Tilpapara, he said.

Sensing the matter, locals caught him red-handed while he was trying to steal another motorbike from the house around 5:30am and gave him a good thrashing, the police official said.

Later, police rescued him from the spot and sent him to Mugda General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 11:00am, the OC added.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College for autopsy.
