Mahbubul Hoque Shakil was laid to rest at his hometown yesterday after hundreds of people paid loving tributes to him on the Dhaka University campus and his Mymensingh home town.
After the first namaj-e-janaza at DU central mosque and second one at local Anjuman Eidgah after Maghrib prayers, he was buried at the town's Bhatikashar municipal grave.
Shakil, a special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, died of cardiac arrest at a restaurant in the capital on Tuesday. He was 47.
When the body of Shakil reached his town's Baghmara residence around 2:30pm, a heart-rending scene was created. Nothing could stop the wailing of his parents, family members and relatives and well-wishers.
Similar situation prevailed on DU campus too when Shakil's first janaza was held at the central mosque as hundreds of his well-wishers broke in tears. He was a popular student leader during 1990s.
Many who knew Shakil from his student life came to the campus from different parts of the country. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, ministers Syed Ashraful Islam, Asaduzzaman Noor, Mosharraf Hossain, and DU Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique also attended the janaza.
Around 11:30am, an ambulance carrying Shakil's body left the campus for his Mymensingh residence. A motorcade comprising some 200 vehicles joined the ambulance.
Before his second namaj-e-janaza around 4:00pm, the body was kept at local Town Hall for all to pay their tribute, reports our Mymensingh correspondent.
