BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who was earlier jailed for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, was shown physically ill for non-appearance during yesterday's hearing of Gatco graft case filed against her on September 2, 2007.
The custody warrant sent to a Dhaka court, endorsed by assistant surgeon of Dhaka Central Jail, reads that Khaleda's condition is not suitable -- for that reason, she cannot be produced before the court.
Md Ataur Rahman, judge (in-charge) of the Special Judge Court-3, accepted the custody warrant and set June 24 for indictment hearing in the case against Khaleda and 18 others.
Meanwhile, a lawyer for Khaleda has submitted two separate petitions seeking bail in two cases filed against her for undermining the country's map and national flag, and celebrating “fake” birthday.
Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder submitted the petitions with the metropolitan magistrate courts of Md Ahsan Habib and Md Khurshid Alam.
After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ahsan Habib set April 15 for hearing the bail petition in the case filed on November 3, 2016 for undermining the country's map and national flag, while Metropolitan Magistrate Khurshid Alam fixed April 25 for hearing the bail petition of the case filed on August 30 the same year for celebrating “fake” birthday on August 15.
