Kakon Bibi laid to rest

Valiant Freedom Fighter Kakon Bibi Bir Protik was laid to eternal rest at her village home of Jirargaon in Sunamganj's Dowarabazar upazila yesterday afternoon.

Earlier, a namaz-e-janaza was held on Laksmipasha union health complex premises. A team of police gave a guard of honour to the war heroine.

District administration, upazila administration, Muktijoddha Command units of both the district and the upazila, and other socio-cultural organisations paid tribute to the gallant freedom fighter.

Kakon Bibi, a freedom fighter under Bashtola sub-sector of Sector-5, was a secret agent. During the Liberation War, she was arrested and brutally tortured by the Pakistani occupation army.

Kaket Hennyata, known as Kakon Bibi, an indigenous freedom fighter, died on Wednesday night at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for pneumonia. She was also suffering from other old age complications.

Her body was handed over to her family on Thursday morning and an ambulance carried the body to her village home.

Though her date of birth was not confirmed, she was believed to have passed away at 90.

Kakon Bibi was born at an ethnic Khasia family at Natrai village of Meghalaya region of India and came to this part of Bangladesh years before the Liberation War, according to 1971archive.org.

She married Abdul Majid Khan, a Punjabi EPR member. Later, Abdul Majid was transferred to Sylhet and she lost contact with him. She then married Shahid Ali, a local of Kathalbari area in Dowarabazar, and started her new family with a new name, Nurjahan Kakon Bibi.

When Liberation War of 1971 broke out, she moved to Kathalbari camp under Bashbari sub-sector leaving her 3-day old daughter and she was later introduced to Sector-5 commander Mir Shawkat Ali and started working as a spy in the guise of a beggar.

While spying, she was captured by Razakars. She was then tortured and sexually assaulted. But finally, she was released after she convinced them that she was searching for her Punjabi husband. Pakistan Army then gave her a pass and requested her to spy for them what she agreed upon. She soon started providing information about the Pakistani army camps to the freedom fighters.
