Recognising the long-standing solidarity and hospitality of the government and people of Bangladesh, the European Union has said Bangladeshi authorities will continue to contribute to the stability in the region by providing assistance and protection to the people from Rakhine seeking refugee.
The EU also welcomes the Myanmar government for its announcement to establish an inquiry commission into the recent violence in Rakhine State.
“Fear, the loss of livelihoods and shelter, and reported disproportionate use of force by the armed forces push many, particularly women and children, to seek refuge in Bangladesh.
“…It is important that those fleeing violence in Myanmar are not deported or turned back. By providing assistance and protection to them until the situation in northern Rakhine state has stabilised and their safe return can be ensured, the Bangladeshi authorities will continue to contribute to stability in the region,” the EU spokesperson said in a statement issued on December 2.
