BNP yet to pursue Jamaat to withdraw candidacy

BNP is yet to pursue its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami to withdraw its mayoral candidacy in Gazipur City Corporation election scheduled to be held on May 15.

Earlier, the BNP-led 20-party alliance had announced to participate in the city corporation election under the banner of the alliance.

However, BNP leaders said the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is April 23.

“We have talked to Jamaat. Our district leaders will sit with Jamaat. As there is still time in hand, Jamaat will withdraw its candidacy on time,” Nazrul Islam Khan, coordinator of the 20-party-allaince, told The Daily Star yesterday.

The BNP-led alliance held a meeting with its allies last night. All the partners but Jamaat were present.

Gazipur city Jamaat amir SM Sanaullah collected a mayoral form as an independent candidate and launched campaign unofficially. Sanaullah told The Daily Star that he is yet to get any signal to withdraw his candidacy but hope that he would get the alliance's blessings.
