An Awami League nominated chairman candidate of the December 12 Rajshahi zila parishad polls has not paid income tax for four years while serving as the parishad's administrator since December 2011.
Tax details in nomination papers submitted to the Election Commission a day before the December 1 deadline also shows that Abu Yusuf Md Mahbub Zaman Bhulu only paid Tk 4,000 against his income of Tk 3.3 lakh for 2016-17.
This is the first time he paid income tax, Assistant Commissioner at the Rajshahi Income Tax office Mokbul Hossain informed during a query of The Daily Star on Tuesday.
There was also no mention of an additional Tk 3,000 entertainment allowance he got every month, said an official of the Parishad. He did mention possessing electronic goods worth Tk 2 lakh and furniture worth Tk 1 lakh.
The 66-year-old attaining the Bachelor of Arts degree from Rahjshahi University in 1972 stated, without mentioning the source, possessing Tk 15 lakh in cash and Tk 50,000 in a National Bank account opened in November.
“...we will now investigate the matter,” said Mokbul.
Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, Bhulu claimed he only got to know about his taxable income from the tax office recently and that his other tax details were available with his lawyer, whose name he could not recall.
