Two alleged bandits were killed yesterday during a "gunfight" between an unspecified number of bandits and the Rapid Action Battalion in the eastern Sundarbans under Sharankhola range.
Maj Adnan Kabir, deputy commander of Rab-8, quoting local fishermen identified the two killed as Al Amin, 45, and Hossain Mollah, 30, -- who belonged to bandit group "Shamsu Bahini".
The Rab also recovered 11 firearms and 227 bullets from the forest where the shootout took place.
According to Maj Adnan, based on intelligence information, a vigilance team of Rab was dispatched yesterday morning to patrol Dudhmukhi area under Sharankhola range in the Sundarbans.
As the Rab patrol boat entered Badamtoli canal around 8:00am, a gang of bandits from inside the forest mistook the Rab patrol boat for a fishing boat and instructed it to halt.
After the Rab refused to adhere to their command, the gang opened fire on the Rab, triggering retaliatory fire from the law enforcers. The exchange of fire continued for about 30 minutes and at one stage the robbers retreated, Maj Adnan said.
