Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan is gaining a reputation of being an actor who's at home with the commercial 'masala' film as he is with playing grounded, real characters. According to Shoojit Sircar, the director of “October”, the actor was almost mistaken for a hotel employee by tourists while shooting in a five-star hotel, and he didn't break character.

Varun plays a hotel management student in the film, for which he had to reportedly undergo on set training at in a real five-star hotel in Delhi. He went through everything that a hotel management student goes through - from washing toilets, cleaning dishes, vacuuming, cooking, etc. Such was his training, that when he was mistaken for a hotel employee by foreign tourists, he carried on his part as the character.

Shoojit reportedly said that when he met Varun he knew that he had found Dan, the main lead of his film. When Varun texted the filmmaker to ask if he could meet him, Shoojit told him to come to his office immediately as he had to leave for Kolkata. Reports state that Varun was dressed shabbily when he met the filmmaker as he had just woken up.

The director instantly saw the character of Dan in him. He said that when he looked at Varun's eyes, he saw a lot of innocence in them and when he spoke, he realised that he was ready to surrender as an actor, reports Times of India.
